While Monterey Car Week was stacked full of seven-figure hypercar reveals, we were perhaps most interested in the debut of the 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT. It is, at least alongside the likes of the Zenvo Aurora - a lot more ‘real world’, while also looking fabulous and packing a twin-turbo V8. It certainly makes up for the four-cylinder C63.

It will still be very expensive, though, and quite probably a lot spendier than the old one. While we haven’t seen prices just yet, we only need to look at the closely related Mercedes-AMG SL to get a sense of how much will be charged for the GT. After all, the SL55 is £147k.

Thankfully, Mercedes sold a fair few examples of the previous generation AMG GT, and while it doesn’t have teeny, tiny rear seats in which to cram a couple of extra passengers, it is a comparative bargain. We had a look around and found this 2015 GT for sale at a Mercedes dealership in Sheffield, and it’s £54,608.

That’s still a lot of money, of course, but you might not lose a whole lot of money even if you keep it for a while before selling on. AMG GT prices seem to have plateaued - we looked at a used one in 2021, and it was priced only a little higher despite having lower mileage.

Our pick this time has done 71,457 miles, which is fairly heroic mileage for a car like this, but still nothing to worry about. It’s a GT S, which means it has various upgrades over the standard GT including a clever electronically controlled locking rear differential, adaptive dampers and a 503bhp version of the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It makes more power than the new, also 4.0-litre V8-powered entry-level GT55.

Whoever specced it originally didn’t skimp on the options, as it’s specced to the nines with a Burmester surround sound system, the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, the Driving Assistance Package, a carbon fibre trim pack, and much more besides.

As with all first-gen GT coupes, it’s also rear-wheel drive, setting it apart from the new car, which is - for now at least - all-wheel drive only. It might just be prettier, too, but as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we’ll leave that one up to you lot to debate.
